Frequently asked questions

Welcome to the FAQ section. Here, you'll find answers to the questions I hear most often. My goal is to provide you with clear, concise information about homeopathy and how homeopathy can support your journey to better health. I believe in empowering you with knowledge, so you can make informed decisions about your care.

What is homeopathy? Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed in Germany over 200 years ago. It is part of the national health care system of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, South America, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and India.

How does it work? Homeopathy is built on principles of vital energy, dilution, and synergy. It uses gentle, highly diluted but dynamic remedies made from plants, animals, and minerals that are designed to stimulate the body's natural healing response.

How can such a small amount do anything? The process of succussion releases the inherent healing energy of the diluted substance, and the successive dilutions and succussion increases the potency and therefore affecting the depth of healing.

What conditions can homeopathy treat? A wide range of both acute and chronic illnesses may benefit from homeopathic medicine. – The following acute illnesses commonly prescribed for: sports injuries, coughs, colds, diarrhoea, hay fever, travel sickness and more.

Homeopathy may also be of help in deeper, more chronic diseases, including a wide range of illnesses: autoimmune diseases and on-going chronic complaints for which conventional medicine often has nothing further to offer.

Today, extensive clinical experience, observation and research continue to support homeopathy’s effectiveness for a wide range of complaints for men, women, children, infants and the elderly.

What does a visit to a homeopath involve? In-depth investigation is all important when taking a homeopathic case. As well as asking about your symptoms, a homeopathic practitioner will be interested in you as an individual and the unique way in which your symptoms affect you.

The first consultation with a homoeopath may take an hour or more, however simple acute complaints may only take 15-30 minutes. Information relating to current symptoms and past medical history will be required. Questions may also be asked about diet, sleep, lifestyle, and about some mental and emotional aspects. Physical examinations may be required according to the particular complaint.

Treatment then involves the prescription of the most suitable medicine, matching all of the symptoms and individual characteristics of the patient to the medicine. Two people with the same condition may have very different prescriptions because of their own unique set of symptoms. Your practitioner might also advise general lifestyle and dietary changes as part of a treatment plan or recommend a visit to a General Practitioner or for tests to be carried out.

What is succussion? Succussion, or vigorous shaking, with impact, after each dilution, is considered essential to energise (release the inherent healing qualities of) the remedy.
Traditionally, this is done manually by hand, historically with impact on a leather bound bible, especially in lower potencies.

How do you take the remedies? Depending on your individual situation your homeopathic practitioner will give you more specific directions for taking your medicine(s).

  • The medicine is usually taken away from food or drink, or as directed by your practitioner.

  • If you have any questions concerning your treatment, please contact the professional homoeopath treating you.

Can homeopathy be taken with conventional medicine? Homeopathy can be taken in conjunction with pharmaceutical medications as they are not contraindicated. Other traditional therapies will complement homeopathic treatment, however confer with your homoeopath to ensure that the timing of this in your overall treatment plan is ideal.

What type of medicine will be given? Homeopathic medicines can be given in the form of liquid drops or spray, granules, powder, pillules or tablets.

Are there any side-effects? Homeopathic medicines have not been known to produce side effects.

How can homeopathy help me? Homeopathic remedies may help strengthen the body’s self-healing response, helping it to overcome symptoms of an illness as well as side effects of the medical treatment. It may be useful for side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, i.e., nausea and vomiting, while at the same time promoting better energy, mood, sleep, digestion, and a sense of well-being.

How much does it cost? It varies from practitioner to practitioner but generally over-the-counter remedies cost $21 to $28. Remedies from practitioners are often cheaper. Consulting with a professional for the first time is a lengthy visit and typically costs anywhere from$75 to $300. My remedies cost between $5 - $35 depending on size and number of remedies. Adult initial consult is $100-150, follow-ups are $80. Child initial consults are $80, follow ups are $60. Acute consults are between $40-50 depending on the issue.

What's one thing I wish everyone knew about homeopathy?

That it is safe, holistic and gets to the root cause, it gets to the heart of the matter. There is always a mind-body connection that mainstream medicine tenaciously ignores. Homeopathy focus' on this. The client-practitioner process can only be effective with full participation, the homeopath is only as good as the information imparted during the consultation.
